Welcome to the online linguistics centre intended for students of English at the Department of Anglophone Studies, Campus Essen.
This website provides an introduction to the essentials of linguistics. It can be used in conjunction with an introductory course in linguistics, any seminar on a particular topic or to jog your memory about language and linguistics when you are preparing for your examinations (either intermediary or final).
There are basically two types of information here:
1) Sort summaries of various aspects of language which are displayed when you click on the node of a branch in the tree on the left. These sections are preceded by an open book symbol: 
2) Longer texts which can be accessed by clicking nodes which are preceded by the PDF symbol: 
The PDF files can be saved to your hard disk and printed at will. They require the Acrobat Reader which - if you do not already have it - can be downloaded from the following address: www.adobe.com
This website also contains information about courses in linguistics being offered by the author in the current term. Click the relevant node in the Information branch. A window opens showing a tree whose nodes contain information about individual courses.
Make sure to check the option Further websites by author (last option in first branch of tree on left). These contain a large amount of useful information covering other aspects of English, e.g. the history of the language and varieties of English world-wide.
Students should also consult the section Essays and presentations (see the relevant branch of the tree on the left). This contains useful information on doing inclass presentations and writing term essays.
