The God of the Old Testament and the Gods of the nations

The course will compare statements about the Israelite god YHWH made in the Old
Testament with similar statements about a few, but important Gods and Goddesses
of the Ancient Near East. Most prominent among the Gods of the nations are the
Canaanite storm- and weather-god Baal, the Father-God El and the Mesopotamian
Goddess Ishtar. Through comparing the different gods it will be asked what is
specific for the God YHWH.
Hinweis zur Unterrichtssprache:
Im Seminar werden hauptsächlich englische Texte gelesen. Hr. Gericke selbst wird vor allem Englisch sprechen, die Studierenden können aber Englisch oder Deutsch sprechen.
