Melissa Knox-Raab's research focusses on psychoanalytic interpretation of the ways in which writers' lives influence the style and substance of their work. Her first book explores Oscar Wilde's belief that the artistic life is "a long and lovely suicide." Her second evaluates research and criticism about Oscar Wilde between 1990 and 1999. Her research interests include Gender Studies, Women and Literature, and British literature of the late nineteenth century. Her essays on American and British writers have been published in psychoanalytic journals, literary journals, and newspapers.   
She studied at the Columbia University Center for Psychoanalytic Training and Research and the National Psychological Association for Psychoanalysis, both in New York. After finishing her doctoral work in nineteenth-century British literature at Columbia University in 1992, she became a tenured Associate Professor of English at Saint Peter's College in New Jersey. She has taught at Columbia University, Barnard College and Fashion Institute of Technology in New York City as well as The Catholic University of Eichstätt and the University of Bielefeld in Germany.
