Biographical Information

Christian Ludwig studied English and Spanish at the University of Bochum (2002-2006), at the University of Córdoba (2006-2007) and at the University of Duisburg-Essen (2007-2010). From September 2008 until May 2009 he worked as a language assistant at Desborough School, Maidenhead, England. During his time as a student he worked as a student assistant in the Department of Anglophone Studies (Applied Linguistics and Didactics, Chair Prof. Dr. Bernd Rüschoff). Additionally, he worked as a student assistant for AILA 2008 and afterwards as a research assistant for Prof. Dr. Bernd Rüschoff. In 2009, he also worked as a relief teacher at Gesamtschule Meiderich. Quite recently (2010), he completed his First State Exam for German Secondary Schools (Gymnasium/ Gesamtschule) and his additional qualification in German as a Foreign Language (Interkulturelle Pädagogik, DaZ/DaF). At the moment, he is also pursuing his "Hochschuldidaktikzertifikat NRW". He is an active member in various societies of applied linguistics and language teaching.

Areas of Teaching and Research

At present, Christian Ludwig teaches in the field of EFL methodology and linguistics. His main areas of research are learner autonomy and literature in the foreign language classroom with a special interest in graphic novels. In the context of graphic fiction he is especially interested in the construction of American and Asian identity in comics. This includes, apart from the life of Asian immigrants in the USA, Japanese and Korean history and culture. Furthermore, he is pursuing his PhD degree with the provisional title: “The Use of Comics in the Foreign Language Classroom: Graphic Novels in Second Language Acquisition Processes and Intercultural Learning”.However, he is also very active in his second major field of research. At the moment, he is conducting various research projects on learner autonomy in Denmark which will hopefully provide new insights into the perception of autonomy in practice and the linguistic development of learners in autonomy classrooms. In his free time, he is working on the first IATEFL LA SIG E-book series.
