Modul II
Introduction to Linguistics
Ingo Bachmann , Tuesday 10-12, SE 005
This course is designed to provide an introduction to the study of language. Starting with general definitions and properties of language, we will then look at basic issues in the field of linguistics. The primary concern will be with the different levels of linguistics, i.e. phonetics, phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics and pragmatics. Matters to be discussed include some of the major areas of linguistics, e.g. sociolinguistics, varieties of English, language change and language acquisition.
Students are expected to participate regularly and actively in the course. These are two prerequisites for taking the final exam.
The Reader (Reader 6 = Introduction to Linguistics) is available at Reckhammerweg 4.
Modul III or Grundstudium
Exploring English Grammar
Ingo Bachmann , Monday 16-18, SE 005 (Linguistics)
As the title suggest, in this seminar we are going to explore English grammar. Starting with a traditional approach to grammar and its traditional tools for analysis, we will learn how a functional approach to grammar improves the traditional approach we already know.
This course is based on the textbook Exploring English Grammar . The front matter of this book provides a good impression of what we will be doing: "Using a problem-solving approach, [you] explore how grammatical structures function in different contexts. Each chapter focuses on a real-world issue or problem that can be investigated linguistically - such as 'mis'translation or problems arising from a communication disorder - using a wide variety of thought-provoking and engaging texts and activities, including adverts, cartoons, phone calls, and chatrooms. Through these activities, [you] will become equipped to understand and analyse formal and functional grammar in different genres and styles."
