Studying Chemistry . . .

Study courses

Chemistry: "creating your future"
IMPERIA:alt_0_10 The first three years of this course focus on a thorough understanding of fundamental chemistry in several disciplines (inorganic, organic, physical, theoretical and technical chemistry) and training in the relevant principles of physics and mathematics. Additional practical training courses will prepare the students for the scientific work in the Master program. Studying chemistry at the university Duisburg-Essen allows at the Master level a specialization in medicinal-biological chemistry. The latter specialization involves advanced courses in organic chemistry, biochemistry and physiology (partly in cooperation with the clinical centre).

The challenge "Water"
IMPERIA:alt_0_12 Water is one of the most precious resources on earth. The growing demands for safe, clean and affordable potable water can only be met by increased interdisciplinary knowledge of water quality and the advanced, effective and sustainable treatment of water. In this course, such knowledge is offered. Each module is designed to provide the student with tools for a deeper understanding of water chemistry, water analytics and ultimately the biology behind microbial water quality and biological water treatment.

Educational Chemistry
IMPERIA:alt_0_11 Scientific literacy, the understanding of chemical processes and complex relations in science, is an essential prerequisite for leading a responsible life in our society. A chemistry teacher has the chance to develop such competencies in children, adolescents and young adults. At Duisburg-Essen university teacher training courses in chemistry are offered for all branches of the German school system (except of schools for those with special needs). In addition to chemistry content knowledge, special emphasis is put on theories of chemistry education and actual teaching practice in schools. Research in the field of chemistry education is embedded in the research framework of the research group “Teaching and Learning of science” and so students can participate in an internationally active research environment working for their theses.
