Opening Higher Education to Adults:
Opportunities and Threats

This symposium is jointly hosted by the University of Duisburg-Essen and DIE. It will provide an opportunity for dialogue on this important issue between researchers, the policy community and institutional leaders.

The discussions in groups will concentrate on following key questions:
A. ACCESS: What are proven strategies of supporting recognition of prior learning in higher education? How does the opening of higher education to adults influence the body of students and professional study support within Universities?
B.PROVISIONS: What learning opportunities are to be developed to increase the participation of adults in higher education? What are the advantages and disadvantages of open and distance learning provisions for adult learners in higher education?
C. CERTIFICATES: Which modes / models of certification in adult education and vocational education and training are conducive to open higher Education to adults? Why should such models be supported? Which disadvantages are to be expected?
D. INSTITUTIONAL DIVERSITY: Which role plays institutional diversity in the field of higher education for adults? Which strategies to develop the higher education sectors are conducive to improve higher education for adults – improving higher education for adults and integrating this as mission in traditional universities or dividing up the higher landscape into traditional, research-related universities and open universities for enabling continuing and adult education.
