Concluding discussion

Ich möchte einen Schwerpunkt auf die Idee des Workshops legen. Das heißt, dass bis auf wenige Ausnahmen, die Workshop Leiter gebeten wurden, nur einige Thesen und Argumente vorzustellen, anstatt einen ausführlichen Vortrag zu halten. Wir legen viel Wert auf Forschung, Theorie und wissenschaftliche Veröffentlichungen. Deswegen habe ich einige Veröffentlichungen der Referenten im Programm erwähnt. Im Anschluß an das Kolloquium ist eine Veröffentlichung geplant. Deshalb ist es wichtig, dass genug Zeit bleibt, für Diskussionen und Feedback.

An emphasis will be placed on the notion of workshopping. By that I mean that workshop leaders have, with some exceptions, been asked to present a few key argumentative threads and ideas rather than deliver substantial lectures. We are placing value on research, theory and publishable work. That is why I have mentioned a sample of each workshop leader’s published works. And this colloquium will lead to the publication of an edited book. But for the purpose of the colloquium it is important we allow time for the workshop leaders to receive feedback and for there to be lots of discussion.

Der Begriff ‘popular education’ ist als solcher im deutsch-sprachigen Raum kaum bekannt.

Dennoch ist die Idee von ‘popular education’ in unterschiedlichen Bildungsformen und -traditionen im deutschsprachigen Raum implizit vertreten, wie z.B. in einer Bildung, die durch die Interessen, Zielstrebungen und Kämpfe die breite Massen untermauert ist. Haben diese Bildungstraditionen im deutschsprachigen Raum eine lange and inhaltsvolle Geschichte?

Zählen unter diesen Bildungsformen und –traditionen:

Wieviel ist über diese Formen und Traditionen im deutschsprachigen Raum geschrieben und geforscht worden?

Mit dieser Tagung wollen wir eine Gelegenheit für deutsche Wissenschaftler schaffen, ihre Forschungsarbeiten internationalen Kollegen aus der ‘popular education’ zu präsentieren. Ebenso soll englisch-sprachigen Kollegen die Möglichkeit gegeben werden ihre Forschungen zu „popular education“deutschen Kollegen zu präsentieren.

Das internationale Popular Education Network hat bis heute leider wenig Kontakt mit deutsch-sprachigen Kollegen. Durch diese Tagung sollen solche Beziehungen aufgebaut werden. In der Tagung und der geplanten Veröffentlichung wird Englisch die Englisch Hauptsprache sein. Sie können mit Rick Flowers aber auch auf Deutsch korrespondieren. Er ist der Tagungsleiter und ein ‘popular educator’ an der University of Technology, Sydney. Im Wintersemester 2008/09 ist Rick Flowers Gastprofessor an der  Universität Duisburg-Essen.

Popular education, and literal translations in German (Volksbildung?), is a term which has not been widely used in German-speaking contexts.

Nevertheless, is the idea of a ‘popular education, ie an education that is rooted in the interests, aspirations and struggles of ordinary people, implicit in various forms of education that have rich histories in German-speaking contexts?

Do forms of popular education include:

• critical and emancipatory tradtions of informal education and social pedagogy in youth and community work?
• working class education initiatives, especially in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries?
• political education in the face of authoritarianism and for democratic renewal?
• adult education for social action and active citizenship?
• education for international development and solidarity?
• arts and cultural action?

How much research and writing is there in German language about each of these forms and traditions?

The purpose of this conference is to create an opportunity for German scholars to present their research to an audience of international popular educators. And conversely, the conference will enable English-language scholars who have researched aspects of popular education in the German-speaking world to present their work to a German audience.

There is an international network of popular educators but, to date, there are few links with kindred spirits in the German-speaking world. We hope this conference will enable more links to be built. While English will be the main language at the conference and in planned publications, you can correspond in German with Rick Flowers who is the conference convenor. Rick is a popular educator at the University of Technology, Sydney and is a Visiting Professor at the University of Duisburg-Essen in the 2008/9 winter semester.
