Research, teaching and knowlege transfer determine the tasks of the Institute of East Asian Studies at the University of Duisburg-Essen.

That means:

• Contemporary, interdisciplinary East Asia Research in the fields of Economy, Political Science, Society, Geography, History and Culture,  

• coordination of the networked range of teaching including the language training Japanese- and Chinese-Intensive,

• expansion of the specialized library,

• collection and documentation of information concerning East Asia,

• regular colloquia regarding current East Asia related topics,

• scientific conferences and symposia about East Asia,

• Institute Reports (published annually),

• publication of current research results,

• transfer of research and information into non-university practical application, and finally

• placing students (in the course of the Master thesis) and qualified alumni respectively in companies, administrations and institutions to make inquiries on-site in East Asia.
