A Novel Mechanism Composition Principle Based on ordered Single- Opened-Chains (SOC), the Constraint Degree of a SOC and the Coupling Degree of an Assur Kinematic Chain (AKC)
In this lecture, a novel mechanism composition
principle based on the so-called ordered Single-
Opened-Chain units (the SOCs) is introduced, from
which two new important concepts, namely, the
constraint degree of a SOC, and the coupling
degree of an Assur Kinematic Chain (AKC), are
developed together with an explanation of their
calculation approaches and their physical meaning.
Via some typical and complex linkages it is
illustrated how a mechanism can be decomposed
into a series of SOCs with positive, negative and
zero constraint degree, respectively, how these
SOCs can be grouped into appropriate AKCs, and
how the coupling degree can be employed both to
generate efficient solutions for forward position
kinematics of complex linkages as well as to
evaluate the complexity of topological properties of
mechanisms. As a conclusion, a new mechanism
composition principle is proposed which can be
applied to all planar mechanisms and spatial
parallel mechanisms both from the viewpoint of
analysis and synthesis.
