Experimental methodology in psychology course

Happy winners at the 1st poster congress

On 18 February, 2010, the first poster congress within the course Experimental Methodology in Psychology took place. This course consisted of a lecture plus a tutorial and lab course. Here, students in their third semester in the course of studies “Komedia” had learned how to plan and conduct experimental research by planning and conducting a study themselves. They were supported by higher level students and the scientific staff of the Section General Psychology: Cognition (Prof. Dr. Matthias Brand). Topics of the conducted studies were derived from research topics of the section. The costs for printing the posters were financed by money from tuition fees. 29 posters were in the race for the prizes of best poster judged by the students and best poster judged by the teaching staff.

1st prize in the category Best Poster (judged by the students) was awarded to Calina Herzog, Rebecca Streidt, Isabell Wolf, Lisa Pollmann, Judith Meinert and Kerstin Pieper for their poster „Spielt die Körperunzufriedenheit eine Rolle bei der Bewertung von Lebensmitteln, die mit Labels versehen sind?“ (“How important is the degree of satisfaction with one’s own body when rating labeled food?”). 2nd place were Julia Karen Franke, Nina Kassmann, Sonja Müller, Hannah Piecha, Pascal Pinkus, Jessica Ruiz Ribota and Berenike Schlereth for their poster with the headline „Andere Menschen wären entsetzt, wenn sie über mein Kaufverhalten Bescheid wüssten“ (“Other people were shocked if they knew about my shopping behaviour”). Carolin Straßmann, Alexander Becker, Elias Kyewski, Thilo Podann, Tobias Wagner and Leonard Wiering were awarded the 3rd place for their poster with the topic „Kaufentscheidungen unter Unsicherheit – Wie sich Empfehlungen auf das Kaufverhalten von Online-Artikeln auswirken“ (“Buying decisions under uncertainty – How recommendations influence shopping behaviour when shopping for journalistically edited papers online”).

The teaching staff awarded their 1st prize to Mauritz Heuer, Carina Wiesen, Jaqueline Schmoldt, Bao Trinh, Gerrit Elsbecker and Jessica Ignalski. Their posters’ headline read „Männer finden’s praktisch, Frauen finden’s schön“ (“Men find it practical, women find it beautiful”). Thanh Ly, Long Do, Patrick Eifler, Aydin Peynirci and Mareike Last chose the topic „Und wie entscheiden Sie sich? – Untersuchung zum Entscheidungsverhalten von ‚World of Warcraft‘-Spielern unter expliziten Regeln“ (“And how do you decide? A study on World of Warcraft players’ decision making behaviour in situations with explicit rules“) and were awarded 2nd place. Joseph Greve, Stefan Liszio, Tobias Muth and Konstantin Wilms achieved the 3rd place with their poster „Nichts ist komischer als das Unglück (natürlich anderer) – Geschlechtsspezifische Unterschiede in Wahrnehmung und Wirkung aggressionshaltiger Videos“ (“Nothing is funnier than bad luck – of others, of course! Gender-specific differences in the perception and impact of video clips showing aggressive behaviour”).

Congratulations to all winners and all participants of the poster congress.
