Welcome to the website of the Chair of Thermal Process Engineering at University Duisburg-Essen.

The chair of Thermal Process Engineering at University Duisburg - Essen was established in July 2007. The foundation was part of the realignment of the Faculty of Engineering in connection with the fusion of the universities Duisburg and Essen. The chairs of Enviromental Technology / Process Engineering (Prof. K. G. Schmidt) and Waste Technology (Prof. J.-D. Herbell) were merged. At the same time a close link with the Institut für Energie- und Umwelttechnik IUTA e. V. was realized. As holder of the chair Thermal Process Engineering Prof. Bathen is also scientific director of IUTA e.V., which is an affiliated institute at the University of Duisburg-Essen.
teaching
In the early stages of study (Bachelor) we teach the general principles of process engineering. In the higher semesters (Bachelor and Master), we deepen the basics through lectures in thermal process engineering, process and plant technology, adsorption, process simulation and environmental technology. A complete list of our courses can be found under TEACHING.
research
We focus on industrial applications of adsorption and absorption. With respect to adsorption processes, we consider the entire range of liquid and gas phase procesess, especially the separation of trace components in the ppm to ppb range. As for absorption processes, the focus is on the separation of CO2 and mercury from flue gases and biogas. All work is done in close cooperation with IUTA e. V.
Detailed information on our expertise, projects and test facilities is available under RESEARCH, a complete list of publications under PUBLICATIONS.
In addition, we work on a wide range of environmental and energy topics at IUTA e. V., which has dealt in recent years particularly with aerosols & fine particles, (sustainable) nanotechnology, functional surfaces, future energy supply and highly toxic substances.
