The European commission and China have recently approved an ambitious project (ELECTRA) to improve bioremediation of surface water, groundwater and soils by means of bioelectrochemical technology. We aim to develop a bioelectrochemical in situ method for the remediation of polluted groundwater using nanomaterials.

We are looking for candidates (m/w) with PhD in Chemistry/Microbiology or comparable. A sound knowledge of electrochemistry as well as basic knowledge of synthesis and analysis of nanoparticles is expected. You must be willing to travel internationally on a regular basis (including China) and have a good written and spoken command of English.
The job requires good teamwork skills and organizational talent for the coordination and implementation of the project.

In cooperation with thyssenkrupp Steel Europe AG the Department of Aquatic Microbiology offers a position for a master thesis.
The topic of the project is on tar oil contamination of groundwater at an industrial site. Due to its vicinity to the local steel works the groundwater passes through a strong temperature gradient. The aim of the master project is to investigate how the temperature gradient affects the activity of degradation of the tar oil. For this purpose, groundwater samples taken on site will be further analyzed by molecular and biological methods regarding the microbial community. In addition, a newly developed analytical technique (reverse isotope labelling) will be applied to estimate the microbial mineralization of the tar oil. Start of the project is after consultation. After 10 years of European funding, 350 students and 65 countries, applications for the Advanced Masters in Structural Analysis of Monuments and Historical Constructions are opened up to January 20, 2018. This is the leading international course on conservation of heritage structures, winner of the 2017 European Union Prize for Cultural Heritage "Europa Nostra", and a unique opportunity to meet people from all over the world.

The summer school is offered by the Biofilm Engineering Research Group at the Gene and Linda Voiland School of Chemical Engineering and Bioengineering, Washington State University as an extension of the summer workshops we previously offered, for eight years, at Montana State University, where Drs. Beyenal and Lewandowski were working together. Because of high demand we decided to continue our workshop series. The summer workshops we offered at Montana State University for eight consecutive years were all well attended by participants from industry and academia. The workshops were evaluated as “a must attend” by the participants, and many of them developed their own biofilm research laboratories after completing the workshops. Following the suggestions of participants of past years, we are consolidating the workshops and offering them in sequence as a Summer School.

The workshops are offered by Dr. Haluk Beyenal of the Chemical Engineering Department at Washington State University (https://www.biofilms.wsu.edu) and Dr. Zbigniew Lewandowski of the Center for Biofilm Engineering at Montana State University (https://www.biofilm.montana.edu). Drs. Lewandowski and Beyenal published the book Fundamentals of Biofilm Research (https://www.crcpress.com/product/isbn/9780849335419), and the Summer Schools at Montana State University in Bozeman were based on that book. For the Summer School at Washington State University in Pullman we have decided to extend the content and to include biofilm technologies developed since 2007 and electrochemically active biofilms.

The Summer School is a sequence of three workshops introducing the participants to the basic principles of biofilm processes and continuing to more advanced topics on evaluating biofilm activity using microsensors, evaluating biofilm structure using various types of microscopy and image analysis, and evaluating electron transfer processes in biofilms. As part of the workshop materials, each participant will receive a copy of Fundamentals of Biofilm Research.

For detailed agendas, lectures, lab sessions, and instructors, please visit the web page of each workshop. Overall, the activities include five days of lectures and lab sessions and a farewell dinner after each workshop (Tuesday, Wednesday; and Friday).

A limited number of fellowships are available for qualified graduate students.

The workshops will be held at the Gene and Linda Voiland School of Chemical Engineering and Bioengineering, Washington State University. The campus is located at the center of the Pullman area. Directions and a map of the area will be sent to registered participants with the registration materials.

To preregister, please call or e-mail Haluk Beyenal. Once preregistered, you will receive information to complete payment. The payment must be received by June 19, 2017.

Cancellation
The organizers reserve the right to cancel the workshop because of insufficient enrollment or other unforeseen circumstances. If the workshop is cancelled, the organizers will refund all registration fees, but cannot be held responsible for any other related costs, charges, or expenses, including cancellation/change charges imposed by airlines or travel agencies.
If a participant has paid the fee but due to unforeseen circumstances cannot attend the workshops, he or she may receive a refund. Refunds will be made for cancellations received in writing by June 19, 2017. The participant will be charged a $200 administrative fee if he/she cancels by June 19, 2017. After June 19, 2017, there will be no refunds, and the participant or the organization will be held responsible for the fee. Anyone who is registered but cannot attend may send a substitute.

The summer school is offered by the Biofilm Engineering Research Group at the Gene and Linda Voiland School of Chemical Engineering and Bioengineering, Washington State University as an extension of the summer workshops we previously offered, for eight years, at Montana State University, where Drs. Beyenal and Lewandowski were working together. Because of high demand we decided to continue our workshop series. The summer workshops we offered at Montana State University for eight consecutive years were all well attended by participants from industry and academia. The workshops were evaluated as “a must attend” by the participants, and many of them developed their own biofilm research laboratories after completing the workshops. Following the suggestions of participants of past years, we are consolidating the workshops and offering them in sequence as a Summer School.

The workshops are offered by Dr. Haluk Beyenal of the Chemical Engineering Department at Washington State University (http://www.biofilms.wsu.edu) and Dr. Zbigniew Lewandowski of the Center for Biofilm Engineering at Montana State University (http://www.biofilm.montana.edu). Drs. Lewandowski and Beyenal published the book Fundamentals of Biofilm Research (http://www.crcpress.com/product/isbn/9780849335419), and the Summer Schools at Montana State University in Bozeman were based on that book. For the Summer School at Washington State University in Pullman we have decided to extend the content and to include biofilm technologies developed since 2007 and electrochemically active biofilms.

Singapore Centre for Environmental Life Sciences Engineering (SCELSE) is currently offering our 6th Summer Course from 3 – 21 July, 2016 at Nanyang Technological University, Singapore.

The Summer Course brings together world-renowned scientists and engineers including SCELSE scientific leaders, and guest experts. Participants will interact with these experienced mentors in their interdisciplinary approach to understand and harness the biology of biofilms in environmental, health and industrial applications. Learning outcomes involve understanding mechanisms and processes using quantitative approaches. This knowledge will be used to help design experiments that can yield information for developing new technologies or solving problems in the engineered environments. It also unites fields such as engineering and microbial ecology through the commonalities of biofilms. Notably, the course format provides ample opportunities for the participants to interact closely with the mentors in small groups and informal settings.

The course is held in the midst of NTU's rich, green campus. Graduate and postgraduate researchers are invited to participate in this international Summer Course. The GSS Summer School comprises two parts: three days of plenary lectures and one day of experimental or theoretical hands-on courses. The lectures of the Summer School 2015 will take place Tuesday 17th to Thursday 19th of May. The first two lecture days will focus on the role of the solvent in activity and selectivity of nanostructured electrocatalysts. An MSc thesis topic is available in the area of microbial diagnostics. The project is performed at the Water Research Center IWW (located in Mülheim an der Ruhr), which closely collaborates with the Biofilm Centre of the University of Duisburg-Essen. The work is in collaboration with an industrial partner and aims to develop new diagnostic technologies to quantitatively assess the efficiency of UV-based water treatment. UV is known to be an effective disinfectant due to its strong germicidal ability with proven efficiency to inactivate bacteria, viruses and protozoa. Diagnostic methods applied in this project comprise PCR-based technologies combined with different sample pretreatment steps. This molecular approach to quantify the extent of UV-induced DNA damage is supplemented by traditional cultivation of bacteria to measure inactivation of cell replication. The earliest project start date is early 2016.

Title: Improving microbial quality of drinking water among households in rural Nepal: A Baseline Field Assessment

Background: In rural Nepal, Helvetas Swiss Intercooperation has been implementing a community water resources management project since 2001 using a participatory approach to increase rural households’ access to safe water, sanitation, and hygiene. However, recent studies revealed that 43% of existing schemes do not meet quality, quantity or continuity standards (DWSS, 2011), and 93% of water samples collected are faecally contaminated (Enpho, 2010). In addition, recent research has shown that even among piped systems delivering safe water, the water consumed in rural homes is often of poor quality. Thus, a component focusing on promoting household water treatment and safe storage (HWTS) was added to the project.

To support strategic planning and effective implementation of project activities and to disseminate best practices for promoting HWTS in Nepal, Eawag/ Sandec has outlined a 3-year research study in collaboration with Helvetas. The research activities will include three distinct components: A) Baseline study: measure water quality at various points along the piped network, during handling practices, and within storage containers in homes. Also assess attitudes and water handling practices among water users and current market conditions for HWTS products. B) Intervention development: on the basis of insights gained, develop a comprehensive strategy for the promotion of effective HWTS. C) Implementation and monitoring: following delivery of a HWTS intervention (products and behavior change campaign), observe longitudinal changes in attitude, practice, and the quality of water consumed in the home.

The student will be directly responsible for the baseline water quality assessment and will supervise interviewers conducting household interviews. The ideal student will have experience with water sampling; aseptic technique and microbial enumeration methods; survey instrument design; data entry and statistical analyses; and working in remote community settings. Knowledge of excel, IGOR, and/or SPSS is a plus.
Research Objectives: The main goal of this research is to improve the quality of water consumed by households accessing piped water supplies in rural Nepal by devising and implementing a strategy for sustainable HWTS. Following a brief literature review to be performed at Sandec, the student will design and execute a water sampling strategy for one or more piped water systems in rural Nepal. Samples will be collected and analyzed for fecal indicator bacteria using field enumeration methods (e.g., compact dry plates). In additional, the student will supervise a team of interviewers conducting in-person interviews and structured observations to investigate attitudes and water storage/handling practices, as well as investigate current market and distribution options for HWTS products. Upon return to Sandec the student will synthesize quantitative and qualitative data to understand how and when re-contamination of drinking water occurs, identify key factors that should be addressed during a behavior change campaign, and devise potential strategies for product marketing promoting treatment and safe storage in the home.
Methods: The student will spend about 1 month at Sandec to conduct the literature review and become familiar with the relevant data collection techniques, including sample collection and processing. In Nepal, the student will work closely with Helvetas to select communities, enroll households, and collect survey and water quality data. In the final months of the project, the student will return to Sandec to synthesize the research (literature review and empirical data analysis) into a final report. The total duration of the project is expected to be about 6 months beginning in September 2014.

Output: The output of this research will be a MSc thesis which provides a baseline assessment of water quality from “source to sip” for piped networks in rural Nepal and suggests key factors that should be addressed in an intervention to improve water quality in the home. This study will provide the basis for strategic intervention planning. The final product will likely be a peer-reviewed journal article.

„Untersuchung zum Vorkommen von Legionellen in Trinkwasser-Installationen von Gebäuden in Abhängigkeit von der Wassertemperatur “
Es handelt sich um eine Arbeit mit praxisrelevanten mikrobiologisch-hygienischen Aspekten im Rahmen eines Forschungsprojekts zur Energieeffizienz und Hygiene in der Trinkwasser-Installation.
Die Arbeit hat folgende Schwerpunkte:
1. Systematische Bestandsaufnahme von Trinkwasser-Installationen ausgewählter Gebäude durch Begehungen, Entnahme von Wasserproben an festgelegten repräsentativen Zapfstellen und Bestimmung physikalischer und chemischer Parameter vor Ort im Team.
2. Laboruntersuchungen der Wasserproben hinsichtlich ihrer mikrobiologisch-hygienischen Beschaffenheit durch die Bestimmung fakultativ pathogener Bakterien, insbesondere von Legionellen mit der medizinisch wichtigsten Spezies Legionella pneumophila. Die Quantifizierung dieser Bakterien erfolgt mit klassischen Kulturverfahren und parallel molekularbiologisch mit PCR-basierten Methoden.
3. Auswertung der Daten unter dem Aspekt möglicher Korrelationen zwischen dem Auftreten von Legionellen und physikalisch-chemischen Parametern, insbesondere der Wassertemperatur.

LUT´s Laboratory of Green Chemistry is focused on minimizing the hazard and maximizing the efficiency of any chemical choice. One approach is also to find new solutions to prevent and decrease environmental pollution.

The Laboratory is located in Mikkeli, Finland and Head of the Laboratory is Prof. Mika Sillanpää. In the past, the laboratory has specialized in water analysis and water, wastewater and soil purification techniques in following research areas:
• Adsorption
• Advanced oxidation processes (AOPs)
• Analytics and online monitoring
• Electrochemical technologies and electrokinetics

We now have

• three Doctoral Student positions available

which are related to mine water treatment and management within the following specific topics.
The overall aim of the project is to convert a liquid waste into a resource by using intelligent techniques and the result shall be mine water winning instead of mine water treatment. Those positions will be under the supervision of Prof. Mika Sillanpää and Dr. habil. Christian Wolkersdorfer who is Finnish Distinguished Professor for Mine Water Management and South African Research Chair for Acid Mine Drainage Treatment.

• PhD position 1: Valorisation of metal enriched Mine Water by means of Biotechnology and improved Process Control. Mine Water might be enriched in metals that can be extracted from the water. An optimised process control as well as biotechnology in conjunction with electrochemical methods and advanced oxidation techniques will be able to extract those metals from the mine water and will contribute to the valorisation of this current waste stream. The project shall investigate and use potential biotechnological processes and implement them on a bench and pilot scale in addition with optimising the processes.
• PhD position 2: Improving mine water winning with nanotechnology and improved sensor technology. The project shall investigate potential nanotechnology options in conjunction with other methods and the optimisation of sensors used in mine water treatment. The results shall be implemented on a bench and pilot scale.
• PhD position 3: Implementing Geothermal Processes and Hydrodynamic Principles into Mine Water Winning. Mine water usually has elevated temperatures and elevated metal concentrations. The project shall investigate how geothermal applications can be used within the mine water winning process to heat the mine buildings or to enhance the winning process. Hydrodynamic investigations in the mine shall ensure the optimal flow of the mine water is known and can be used to optimise the winning process.

Applicants should have MSc or MSc (Eng.) degrees either in chemical engineering, environmental sciences, environmental technology, electro-chemistry, biotechnology, chemistry or other related area. The position requires a motivation to complete the doctoral degree within the target time. In addition, the candidate is required to present a postgraduate study plan and a research plan, which are approved at the beginning of the employment relationship (for the person appointed).

The employment relationship is fixed-term. The aim for a Doctoral Student is to complete the doctoral degree in 4 years. The position will be available initially for one year and can be extended for another 3 years provided that the studies have progressed satisfactorily.
The salary will be determined according to the university salary system for teaching and research personnel, job demand levels 1-4 (1767.97 – 2432.20 EUR/month). In addition, the salary will include an individual pay component based on the performance and competence, amounting to a maximum of 46.3 % of the job-specific pay component .
Applicants should start their work latest in August 2014 and working place is located in Laboratory of Green Chemistry, Mikkeli, Finland. Part of the work might be conducted in remote areas and it is expected that the applicants will also contribute to research and education related activities of the chair.

Liebe Studierende der Fakultät Chemie,

zur Unterstützung der Internationalisierung in den Ingenieur- und Naturwissenschaften bietet der DAAD jungen Studierenden die Möglichkeit zu einem
Forschungspraktika an Hochschulen und außeruniversitären Forschungseinrichtungen weltweit.
Die Praktika finden weitestgehend in der vorlesungsfreien Zeit statt, wobei die Laufzeit -- zwischen sechs und zwölf Wochen -- individuell vereinbart werden kann. Forschergruppen auf der ganzen Welt bieten Projekte an, die durch den Einsatz eines deutschen Forschungspraktikanten unterstützt werden sollen. Die Unterstützung durch den DAAD beinhaltet ein monatliches Vollstipendium und eine Reisekostenpauschale. Die Bewerbungsfrist läuft noch bis zum 13. Januar 2014.

Wie auch im letzten Jahr sind gemeinsame Projekte mit unserer Partnerhochschule UKM in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia entwickelt worden. Die Partnerschaft mit dieser Universität besteht bereits seit 13 Jahren und zeichnet sich durch ein reichhaltiges Betreuungs- und Unterstützungsangebot für Studierende der Uni Duisburg-Essen aus – momentan befinden sich ca. 50 Studierende aus verschiedenen Fachbereichen an der Universität.

In diesem Jahr ist ebenfalls ein Projekt der “Faculty of Science and Technology Centre for Water Research and Analysis (ALIR)“ mit dem Titel
“An Analysis of Mercury Speciation in Malaysian Aquatic Environment (MY-CH-781)” entwickelt worden.

More and more students approach me for recommendation letters.
In principle, I am ready to write such letters, but not automatically. Here are the conditions:
1. I want at least one week time for that (NOT “as soon as possible” or “tomorrow”!!) – it is good if I know a deadline.
2. Please, provide the address and institution to which the letter has to be directed, and, if applicable, the points that have to be addressed
3. Provide also the reason why I should recommend you – what are your strengths? Provide your CV and Notenspiegel. I may hesitate to recommend students from the lower end of performance.
4. It would be useful if you would submit already a draft for the letter.
