Language Courses at UDE

At University of Duisburg-Essen, The IwiS (Institute for Scientific Key Compentences) offers language courses.

German courses at various levels (A1 to C1) are offered both during the semester and in the semester break. There are also courses (“Übungen”) on topics such as German as a language of science or German for the workplace.

A list of all the language courses offered this semester is available in the university prospectus (LSF).

For enrolled PhD students, registration is possible via the university prospectus.

Researchers please register by writing an e-mail to sprachkurse@uni-due.de. Please mention that you are a researcher at UDE and specify which course or level you are interested in.

Tandem Language Learning ("Sprachtandem")

In addition, the International Office can put you in contact with a "language tandem partner". This tandem system gives you the opportunity to improve your language skills by interacting with native speakers without the constraints of course timetables, whilst at the same time learning interesting facts about daily and professional life as well as recreational opportunities in Germany.

German courses offered by other providers

Public institutions and private schools and institutes offer language courses as well. We cannot recommend you any specific language school, but we can give you a brief overview of language course providers in Duisburg and Essen:

EURAXESS Germany also offers information on learning the German language. Moveover, there is a Goethe-Institut in Düsseldorf offering German courses.

Language Café "Café-Lingua"

"Café-Lingua" is organised by the Studierendenwerk Essen-Duisburg and offers you the opportunity to practice German or other languages with native speakers and other language learners in a relaxed atmosphere. Participants can talk with each other regardless of their level of procifiency. The event takes place every Monday from 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm (but not during semester breaks).
