ZMB Research Programme III

Genetics, Developmental, Molecular and Cell Biology

The completion of the human genome project and subsequent advances in scientific understanding and the development of novel research tools in the last decade have given new insights into the nature of many disease pathways on the molecular level. The understanding of the origin, the character and the progression of diseases is important to develop novel strategies for their treatment and the development of novel therapies and drugs. This programme comprises research groups with detailed knowledge of chromosome organisation, gene expression, gene silencing, cell biology, cellular interactions and developmental biology. These groups are using a variety of approaches and model organisms, to discover fundamental principles of life and the consequences of their dysfunction for disease development.
