In Old Testament theology, one generally asks the question: "What is Yahweh like?" In this course, however, which will be dealing with the Old Testament from the perspective of philosophy of religion, we will be asking a more unusual question, namely: "What – according to the Old Testament – is a 'god'?" In other words, we want to know why Yahweh is called a "god" in the first place and what the fundamental requirements for classifying something as a 'god' in the ancient world were. In this way we will be able to discover what the Old Testament takes for granted concerning the fundamental nature and characteristics of deity in general, and how these meta-theistic assumptions in ancient Israelite religion are both similar and different from those found in other ancient Near Eastern religions and in contemporary philosophical theology.
