Changing money could be done while you are waiting for your luggage. At the right hand side of the exit doors is a small bank counter.

The coins are in values of (1 Cent, 2, 5, 10, 20, 50 Cent, 1 Rand, 2, 5 Rand) but for every value they have 2 different coins! That is very disturbing for a foreigner especially because some of the smaller values are bigger in diameter and vice versa. Most of the south african shops will round the total price at the counter to 5 or 10 Cents. They will not accept the small coins!
The notes are in values of 5, 10, 20, 50, 100 and 200 Rand

20 Rand
50 Rand
100 Rand
I prefer to divide the different values in different pockets of my jacket (ranger or photographer outfit). If you remember well where you stored which value, the paying will be easier. If you imagine the real value of the Rand than you will see that the smaller values have mostly no expression in your own currency.

New notes are issued since the beginning of 2005. The differ only a little from the old ones.
