VAT-Refund
Since end of 2009 the new departure terminal has been finished. But the preparation for the Airbus 380 will start soon.Now the VAT-Refund-desk is just in front of the check in area at the left side. Please follow the signs. You will receive there a detailed slip with all your goods after you showed all your collected slips and the belonging goods (see the following graphic). They like to see each and every and even the smallest piece! Inside the Duty-Free-area you have to show these slips to the VAT-refund-officer and then you will receive a cheque that you can change in foreign currency (only notes, no coins) or in Rand at tzhe bank office in the departure area.
Attention: this procedure takes time at both places. But that's the normal way of being in Africa!
As you have to wait at the VAT-Refund-desk with a part of your luggage until they have proofed really everything by hand, you can check-in much later than you normally would. That means that the "better" seats are mostly occupied when you arrive at the check-in. Try to get a reservation for your seats at minimum the evening before when you check the departure time or better when you confirm your back flight (if necessary). If that is not possible you have to be much earlier at the airport. Pay attention to the circumstances at this refund desk; all passengers of all flights have to pass this desk if they try to get refunds and there are only up to 3 clerks working there! Especially if you are on a non-stop-flight you have to remember that nearly all the passengers like to pass through this refund office the same time!!
I can testify that the clerks at the refund desk do obey that sentence with the "nine points" very striktly!!
You may spend the rest of your money in the duty-free area for
wine, liqueur (only adults over age 21), cigarettes, Biltong (but no
good quality) and plenty of curious. There are different shops. If you
are so lucky to
have NO cabin luggage, well that's the right time to solve that problem.
My experience is that these shops are really expensive!!
