International Graduate School of Mathematics

Universität Duisburg-Essen     Mathematik, Campus Essen

A Masters or Diploma degree is the pre-requisite to enter the PhD Program. In case the university degree is not equivalent to one obtained by a German university, the "Promotionsausschuss" may ask for additional pre-requisites.

Admission to the PhD Program is only possible if one of the participating mathematicians is willing to supervise the PhD student.

The course languages are English and German. The knowledge of the German language is not required to enter the Graduate School. We try to help foreign graduate students to find German language courses during the first two years of their studies. The PhD thesis can be written in English or German.

The members of the Graduate School are registered as PhD students of the University Duisburg-Essen. The tuition for one term is less than 200 €, mainly for insurances (Bachelor and Master students have to pay the regular tuition, i.e. 500 € + 200 €).

PhD students, as all registered students, receive a student ID which allows them to use the University library, and to have lunch at reduced prices at the Mensa. Free public transportation in the region and reduced admission for many public events is also granted to holders of a student ID.

The usual period for the PhD studies is 3 years. One can start the PhD program the beginning of the summer or winter term, but exceptions are possible.

The Graduate School does not provide fellowships. However several of the participating mathematicians have their own research grants, are members of a DFG-graduate college or can help to find teaching jobs at the university.

Applications

should be send by e-mail to the coordinator of the Graduate School, Jürgen Herzog (mat300[no-spam]spi.power.uni-due.de) or by regular mail to

Prof. Dr. Jürgen Herzog
Mathematik, Campus Essen
Universität Duisburg-Essen
45117 Essen, Germany.

In case you want to choose a particular member of the participating faculty as advisor, you should mail her/him a copy. Your application should consist of:

A short CV, including your date of birth, and your university degrees.
A short list of courses (graduate level) you have taken, and the title and subject of your BA, MA and/or Diplom Thesis.
If possible give the name (and e-mail address) of one or two mathematicians willing to write a short letter of recommendation. Or ask them to send their letter directly to Jürgen Herzog.
A short description how you plan to finance your studies.

If you have any questions before sending an application, please contact Jürgen Herzog or any other participating faculty.

In case you really want to know (or to train your German), you can read or download "Die Satzung der International Graduate School".
