Journals of interest
The following list consists of journals which are likely to contain articles of relevance to Irish English. There is no one journal dedicated to just this topic as opposed, for instance, to the position in the United States which has the journal American Speech founded specifically as an outlet for work on different forms of English there. In the north of Ireland the position is somewhat better, for example with the minor journal Ulster Dialect Archive Bulletin and the Belfast Working Papers in Language and Linguistics both of which are dedicated to aspects of English in Ulster. Of relevance to language is the north of Ireland is the Forum for Research on the Languages of Scotland and Ulster which as of April 1993 has a Newsletter edited by Caroline Macafee (formerly of the Ulster Folk and Transport Museum).
The Irish position reflects the general perception of the value of Irish English. A brief glance at the following list shows that most of the journals are concerned with research into the Celtic languages and may occasionally carry articles on English in Ireland, although there tends to be an unseen, institutionalised barrier between Celticists and Anglicists so that the major journals for the former group, such as Celtica, Ériu, Éigse, Studia Celtica, Zeitschrift für celtische Philologie, do not publish any work on English in the Celtic regions. An exception to this is Teanga 'language', published by the Linguistics Institute of Ireland in Dublin, which has in the past published a number of items on Irish English including a dedicated issue on this subject in 1985. The Irish University Review also had a commemorative issue for Alan Bliss in 1990 on the English language in Ireland.
