Development of Technologies for the Transport of LNG on Inland Navigation Vessels: Tank-Propulsion-Hull

Project Description

In the recent years, natural gas as energy source has increasingly gained in importance in the marine sector. Reduced CO2 and particle emissions are the main benefits of natural gas usage. The main objective was to develop technologies for LNG transportation and usage aboard inland navigation vessels. An analytical model of an LNG-cargo-tank was developed, permitting geometrical optimisation as well as the prediction of the LNG state during a ship’s journey. A specific tank design was analysed regarding its mechanical strength. Furthermore, a system for the main engine’s fuel supply from the cargo tank was developed. This system includes a gas processing unit as well as a fuel feed control device. The system‘s safety aspects were assessed in co-operation with several project partners. Guidelines and rule proposals for LNG transport and usage aboard inland navigation vessels were developed. In the future, the guidelines as well as the methods developed can be used by industry and research sectors for the design and construction of competitive LNG inland navigation vessels.
