The reference guide to the history of English
The purpose of this reference guide is to offer a comprehensive overview of literature on the history of English. The reference guide is divided into various sections, each corresponding to a node on the tree. It begins with literature on the background to English, the Germanic and Indo-European context out of which English arose. The second bibliography, with the title Introduction, General, contains works of an overview nature which deal with various periods in the history of English. There follows a group of bibliographies which deal with linguistic levels such as phonology, morphology, syntax and semantics as well as with questions of orthography, standard and dialect. Next come a number of bibliographies which deal specifically with a single period in the history of English. This reference collection also contains a number of bibliographies on general matters such as the history of English literature, readers for the study of English, and works on place and personal names (onomastics).
