Gender at Work

Gender is embedded in the organization of work and employment relations. Academic studies of gender and work emerged after the 1960s as female labour force participation rose and after the increasing importance of the ‘feminisation of labour’ concept. Women’s status at work differs in the countries with different development paths and is related to the policies against gender discrimination and inequalities in those countries.

Gender inequality is experienced as widespread in working life and women have extra responsibilities to balance work and family because of their roles as a woman at home. Additionally, the global economic crisis is having a determining effect on the historically disadvantaged position of women. This position includes the underrepresentation of women in the labour markets and their over-representation in informal and vulnerable employment.
