Key Issues in Metropolitan Research

RUHR LECTURE “The Future of the Ruhr Region: Beyond 2018 and the End of Mining”

As the structural change of the Ruhr Region from a region dominated by coal mining and the steel industry towards an economic, socially and culturally diversified metropolitan region has been – and still is – a globally visible and still ongoing process, the current RUHR LECTURE will discuss the future of the Ruhr Region together with experts and students from the University Alliance Ruhr (UAR) TU Dortmund, Ruhr University Bochum and the University of Duisburg Essen. The opening session will be on October 16th, 2018 at Campus Essen followed by snacks and drinks.

This year’s RUHR LECTURE, hosted by the three Universities Ruhr University Bochum, TU Dortmund and University of Duisburg-Essen, is dedicated to discussing the future of the Ruhr Region. The series of lectures, which takes place on all three campuses, under a different topic each year showcases the broad range of disciplines involved into the Competence Field “Metropolitan Research” of the three Universities cooperating as the University Alliance Ruhr (UAR). Hence, researchers from the UAR Universities as well as external experts from various disciplines present in this multidisciplinary lecture series. While the Ruhr Region is the focal research area, case studies and experiences from other metropolitan regions will be taken into account in a comparative approach. At UDE, the RUHR LECTURE is also part of an introductory module in the master’s programme “Urban Systems”.

From a Cooperation between two Universities to a UAR Research Field

Since 2013, the RUHR LECTURE has been organized by the Institute of Geography at Ruhr-University Bochum and the Faculty of Spatial Planning at TU Dortmund University. In 2016, the Joint Center “Urban Systems” of the University of Duisburg-Essen joined the cooperation. Soon after, since the winter term 2016/2017, the RUHR LECTURE has been organized by the Competence Field “Metropolitan Research” of the UAR. Moreover, the series is part of the activities of the SURF Network Ruhr (Urban and Regional Research Network Ruhr):
