Short biosketch

My research covers selected aspects of applied ecology, focussing on aquatic bioassessment and biodiversity, with a special emphasis on the definition of biological integrity and ecosystem health. My work mainly contributes to the various facets of implementing the European Water Framework Directive (WFD). I elaborated the scientific basis to establish harmonised ecological ambitions in European river basin management (EU intercalibration exercise). Other tasks encompass the development of methods for the classification of ecological status and potential, research on ecosystem services, restoration ecology, large river management and alternative biomonitoring techniques. I also advice national and international bodies on questions of WFD implementation.
