Junior Research Group – “Nanostructured Air-Stable Thermoelectrics: From Controlled Synthesis to Building of Components”
Led by Dr. Gabi Schierning, the aim of this junior research group is to develop a suitable material for thermoelectric generators. As a theoretical concept, it has been known since the 1990s that nanostructuring can improve the efficiency of thermoelectric generators. However up to now, it has not been possible to put this concept into practice. The missing link is the identification of an inexpensive material that offers adequate levels of efficiency.
The North Rhine-Westphalian Ministry of Innovation is funding the work of this research group.

Junior Research Group – “Rollable Photovoltaic Cells”
Classic photovoltaic cells are produced on rigid substrates and are therefore of limited use for mobile applications due to the lack of mechanical flexibility. Led by Dr. Niels Benson and funded by a North Rhine-Westphalian research grant, the goal of this project is to develop rollable and flexible hybrid thin-film photovoltaic cells with greater efficiency.
