The frontispiece of a later edition of Luther's translation of the New Testament (first edition 1522). This edition appeared the year of Luther's death 1546. The saints of the traditional pictures are replaced by the protagonists of the Lutheran Reformation. The prince, the elector of Saxony is kneeling, where formerly Mary stood, and Luther kneels, where normally St. John would stand. The publishing house, Hans Lufft, was a center of Protestant propaganda.
