Publications on potentiality of early embryonic cells and on its relevance for blastomere biopsy (PID/PGD) (April/May 2011)

Comment

The German parliament (Bundestag) is presently discussing legislative initiatives for regulations of preimplantation diagnosis (PID/PGD). In a number of my publications which are listed on this website (including e.g. a statement given at the Enquete Commission “Recht und Ethik der Modernen Medizin” of the Bundestag in November 2000) I have commented on the biological facts that appear relevant here. For example, a statement made by others and eagerly taken up by certain politicians turns out to be scientifically unsupported, i.e. that totipotency would end with the 8-cell stage, in all blastomeres of human embryos, so that blastomere biopsy could be considered ethically sound and would not be in conflict with the German embryo protection law (Embryonenschutzgesetz) at/after that stage. I have discussed why the biological facts do indeed not support this assumption.
