In 2008, mathematician Professor Hélène Esnault received a great honor by being selected as the recipient of an “Advanced Grant” from the European Research Council (ERC) worth €1 million.

This funding is granted to top international researchers who have excelled in their field in the last 10 years and have earned the freedom in their research to begin attractive new projects in Europe. The ERC is a newly-created instrument of European research funding that supports the cultivation of excellence in basic research and was organized using the German Research Foundation (DFG) as a model.
