The Rector

Rector: Professor Dr. Ulrich Radtke

In accordance with the state law on universities and vocational academies (Landeshochschulgesetz), the Rector is the president of the University Board as well as the chief supervisor of the university’s scientific staff. In cooperation with the other members of the University Board, the Rector represents the university externally and is responsible for the management and strategic direction of the university.

  • Accountability and responsibility regarding the publishing of the University Development Plan and the University Board’s Annual Report
University Management and Internal Communication
  • Managing matters relating to university and higher education policies
  • Chairing formal University Board meetings and informal sessions
  • Leading workshops for the University Board and faculty heads and attending meetings of the University Senate and Faculty Boards
  • Crisis management
Professorial Appointments
  • Holding appointment negotiations
  • Holding retention negotiations
Partnerships
  • Continued development of the University Alliance Ruhr (UA Ruhr)
  • Strengthening regional, national and international collaboration and developing collaborative processes
International Affairs
  • Strategic development of the university’s international perspective
  • Maintaining and expanding international partnerships
Representation of UDE in the Scientific Policy Arena
  • National representation of UDE, e.g., in the State Rectors’ Conference (Landesrektorenkonferenz) and the German Rectors’ Conference (Hochschulrektorenkonferenz)
  • International representation of UDE in the European University Association (EUA) and the AURORA Universities Network
Scientific and Social Representation of UDE
  • Initiating and maintaining contacts with partner organisationss
  • Regular participation in scientific, economic, political, and social events in the cities of Duisburg and Essen as well as in regional, national, and international events
External Communication
  • Managing UDE’s communications and public image, particularly in the media as well as marketing and fundraising initiatives and other events
  • Contributions to scientific journals and higher education sector policy

The Rector has the following additional roles and responsibilities:

  • Deputy chair of the Supervisory Board of Universitätsklinikum Essen (University Hospital Essen)
  • Since August 2016: Spokesperson for the university committee of the German Rectors’ Conference (Hochschulrektorenkonferenz)
  • Chair or member of a variety of internal committees and non-academic external panels, commissions and advisory boards
