Every year, the Volkswagen Foundation awards the Opus Primum Prize to a German-language publication of high scientific quality that is easy to read and understand for a broad audience. Publishers can submit up to three new publications by August 15 that have been written by an author or an author duo and published between 1 October 2018 and 15 October. Authors should not be older than 35 years at the time of submission. Self-applications are not possible.
The Volkswagen Foundation's funding initiative "Artificial Intelligence and the Society of the Future" is entering a new round! The funding program is primarily aimed at social and technical scientists of all career levels who have completed their doctorate and who, in interdisciplinary research alliances, are dedicated to the challenges in the field of artificial intelligence and society. In addition to substantial, long-term project funding (1.5 million euros for a period of up to four years), an optional one-year "Planning Grant" (150,0000 euros) is also applicable. The deadline for planning grants is 4 July 2019, for full grants 17 October 2019.
The Berlin-based Forum Transregionale Studien invites scholars to apply by 22 April 2019 for five postdoctoral fellowships for the academic year 2019/20 for the research program "Europe in the Middle East – The Middle East in Europe" (EUME). The fellowships are intended primarily for scholars in the humanities and social sciences who want to carry out their research projects in connection with the Berlin program. Applicants should be at the postdoctoral level and should have obtained their doctorate within the last seven years. The fellowships start on 1 October 2019 and will end on 31 July 2020. Postdoctoral fellows will receive a monthly stipend of 2.500 € plus supplements depending on their personal situation.
In order to further promote the young and interdisciplinary scientific field of gender research, the Ministry of Culture and Science of North Rhine-Westphalia is for the first time awarding an award for excellent gender research in 2019. The prize is aimed at early career researchers; the first prize is endowed with 50,000 euros and the second with 25,000 euros. Young researchers from NRW universities, universities of applied sciences and colleges of art are eligible to apply. The application deadline is 1 July 2019.
Doctoral and postdoctoral researchers from all disciplines can apply to the DAAD for a research stay (up to six months) in Japan until 30 April 2019. The research stay must begin between 1st October 2019 and 31 December 2019. In the case of doctoral students, the doctorate must be completed within the next two years after the start of funding. In the case of postdocs, the doctorate must not have been completed more than six years ago.
The Schering Stiftung and the Fritz Thyssen Stiftung offer start-up grants to fund promising research ideas by early career researchers. Support is provided for projects in the fields of biochemical, neuroscience or immunological basic research with biomedical implications. The program is explicitly aimed at highly motivated young investigators who wish to pursue an independent career and conduct their own research. Applications for the “Young Investigator Fund for Innovative Research Ideas 2019” are accepted until 15 April 15 2019.

Interested researchers can apply for this year's RUHR School of Modern Epidemiology, which will take place from 9 to 11 July in Essen, until 24 May 2019. This year's Summer School (in English) has the motto "Causal Inference in Epidemiology" and offers a suitable mixture of lectures, paper-based exercises and group work. Prof. Dr. Jay S. Kaufman from the Department of Epidemiology, Biostatistics and Occupational Health at McGill University in Canada was appointed as lecturer for the event.
In 2020, the NRW Consumer Research Prize for Early Career Researchers will be awarded for the ninth time for dissertations, master's and bachelor's theses. The submitted theses should deal with the topics of consumer research, consumer protection or consumer policy action and must have been completed and evaluated at a university in North Rhine-Westphalia between 1 July 2018 and 30 June 2019. The prize money can only be used for research and study purposes (e.g. university fees and contributions, office equipment, scientific literature, computers, research trips, printing subsidies, etc.). Costs incurred in direct connection with the final theses and not incurred more than one year before the prize is awarded can be taken into account. Applications can be submitted until 8 July 2019.
The NRW Consumer Research Competence Centre provides funding for the implementation of projects and financial support for the acquisition of supraregional research funds in the field of consumer research for 2020. Contributions can be submitted from all disciplines relevant to consumer research (e.g. household sciences, computer science, marketing, economics, ecotrophology, nursing science, political science, cultural studies, psychology, law, social sciences, etc.). The Ingrid zu Solms Foundation awards the Ingrid Solms Prize (prize money 5,000 euros) for an outstanding doctorate with a future-oriented research direction in the fields of physics, biology, chemistry, mathematics, computer science or engineering sciences. All women who have completed a corresponding doctorate at a university in the German-speaking area (Germany, Austria, Switzerland) are eligible to apply. Applications can be submitted until 15 May 2019.

The international Summer School on the topic "Social Media as a Digital Agora for Political Arguments, Opinions, and Ideas?", hosted by the Forschungsverbund “Digitale Gesellschaft NRW” and organized by the University of Duisburg-Essen and University of Bonn, offers a fruitful setting for senior and junior scholars to jointly work on current questions of political communication in computer-mediated contexts. On September 24 and 25, the Forschungsverbund NRW Digitale Gesellschaft will host the interdisciplinary conference "Datafizierte Gesellschaft: Praktiken, Prozesse und Folgen der Datafizierung" at the University of Bonn. The conference addresses theoretical as well as empirical questions on the handling and analysis of data in the context of datafication of society and democracy. Submissions for individual presentations, short lectures and poster presentations in a high-density session as well as for thematic panels are desired, deadline is 31 March 2019.

From 8 to 12 July 2019, the Graduate School of Logistics (GSofLog) will be offering an interdisciplinary summer school for doctoral students in logistics and related disciplines in Dortmund. This year's motto is "Rethink Future! Digital Transformation in Logistics". The Summer School is all about scientific methods in the fields of artificial intelligence and machine learning. In addition, GSofLog has currently announced two doctoral scholarships on the topics "Agile and digital processes in supply chain planning and control" and "New methods for multi-criteria negotiation in purchasing taking game theory into account" (duration 3 years, 1,450 euros per month, application deadline 31 March 2019).

In this new series of events, UDE's doctoral researchers get information and tips on the safe and professional publication of research results. In lectures and short workshops, experts from the University Library provide information on topics such as open access, publication channels, copyright and research data management. Participants are given the opportunity to clarify individual questions or to put what they have learned into practice in small exercises. The series of events starts on Thursday, 28 March 2019 (10.15-11.45 h) with a seminar on "Open Science for Beginners. Finding access, ensuring the quality and connectivity of knowledge". These generous full scholarships cover the tuition fees for the entire three-year doctoral program in Australia as well as the cost of living and health insurance. Until 1 April 2019, German early career researchers who are planning a four- to six-month research project at a U.S. university from 1 November 2019 can apply for a Fulbright doctoral fellowship. The scholarship benefits include the financing of living expenses of 1,600 euros per month and international travel expenses as well as a lump sum for expenses (300 euros), health and accident insurance, free application for the Fulbright J-1 visa and admission to the international Fulbright network.
On 26 February 2019, the IGNI innovation offensive of the University of Duisburg-Essen enters its third round. The IZfB workshop "Ethnomethodology in Educational Research" on February 19 with Dr. Rainar Rye Marstrand (University of Southern Denmark) offers a sketchy introduction to Ethnomethodology as a non-formal, non-theoretical, and emic research approach with a particular focus on the methods people use to establish and maintain social order in their everyday life.
