Online Workshops for Doctoral Researchers

Within the Home Training Days series, we offer online training for UDE doctoral researchers of all disciplines. Our workshops allow you to further develop your personal and academic skills remotely.

The current situation due to the COVID-19 pandemic requires a high degree of self-organisation and motivation. Our online workshops give you the opportunity to focus on a specific topic in a defined time frame and to exchange experiences with other doctoral researchers.

The dates are published quarterly. If you wish to suggest a workshop topic, please get in touch.

Registration and Participation

The registration phase begins three weeks before the workshop date and runs for seven days. Places are usually allocated according to the first-come, first-served principle. In individual cases, we reserve the right to make a selection in order to enable as many doctoral researchers as possible to participate in our programme. If you state your motivation or reasons for your participation in the comment field of the registration form, we will try to take this into account.

We will inform you shortly after the registration deadline whether you have a place in the workshop. In case of high demand, we will set up a waiting list.

Workshop Program October to December 2021

11 October 2021: Academic Writing

This workshop supports doctoral researchers in areas that are challenging for many academic professionals who need to produce academic texts in English. Individual and group exercises, discussions, and trainer input enable participants to reflect on their own approaches to writing, their difficulties and possible problem solving strategies. Participants get to know and apply techniques and strategies that can be transferred to their ongoing writing projects immediately and that facilitate more effective, efficient, and successful academic writing.

8–9 December: Networking strategies for doctoral researchers

Networking is essential for building a successful career in (but not exclusively) academia. Innovative research ideas often spring from fruitful collaborations, inspirational conference talks or simply from short exchanges on the campus. Furthermore, networking promotes visibility within the scientific community and thus is a vital door-opener.
Studies have shown that especially informal networks are crucial for career-planning by providing information about codes of conduct, important awards and promising projects within the respective scientific community. This workshop will provide a basic understanding of the structure and functioning of networks in Germany and supports the participants in identifying relevant networks and developing networking strategies to increase visibility and agency within networks.
