Allan Quatermain had it all. A skilled big game hunter, born and raised in Africa, he got to visit strange places, be admired by beautiful and exotic women and find the most fascinating treasures. He was the embodiment of the male Victorian adventurer, a fictional character that still lives on today. The ideal of “muscular Christianity” can be found in a variety of Victorian adventure novels. This seminar will provide an insight into the colonial attitudes and gender identities throughout the Victorian Age. Next to Henry Rider Haggard’s adventures of Allan Quatermain, we will have a look at other heroes of the time. Literature will be made available in our first session.
