When Elizabeth Tudor ascended the English throne in 1558, nobody would have thought that she would last for more than four decades. This seminar will focus on the strategies Elizabeth employed in order to prevail in this most patriarchal environment. We will see that the literary discourse of Petrarchism played the most decisive role in so far as Elizabeth stylized herself as the typical Petrarchan lady who by her angelic appearance and aloofness exercised power over her major courtiers who could only admire her from afar. We will investigate these power relations by turning to literary and non-literary manifestations of the discourse concerning the queen, relying among others on numerous letters written by the likes of the Earl of Essex, Sir Christopher Hatton and Sir Walther Raleigh. Hopefully, at the end of the semester we will have a clear picture of the sociopolitical environment of the Elizabethan court. A reader with primary and secondary texts will be made available at the beginning of the term.
