This course explores historical and contemporary perspectives on the relation between language, sex, gender, and sexuality. Rather than focusing on the way women and men ‘speak differently,’ this course addresses the co-construction of language, gender, and sexuality. We will ask how language is a site for both conventionalization and contestation of normative ideas about gender and sexuality, and how linguists have studied (and participated in) these processes in the last several decades. Topics include historical debates (difference vs. dominance), contemporary issues (identity vs. desire), the negotiation of gendered power, queer linguistics, and the embodied nature of language as it relates to peformativity and indexicality. Class meetings center around critical discussions of readings.
