When I came to Germany in June 2011, I didn't know any German at all, I had no connection to the language.

so I went to the cashier and showed her the device so she would understand what I needed.

So I only communicated with gestures because she didn't speak English and I couldn't explain it any other way. That's how it was, I gradually learned the language.
