Sustainable Governance 2015 Report on Japan
The Bertelsmann Foundation has released its 2015 Sustainable Governance Indicators (SGI) ratings for 41 OECD and EU countries.
The report on Japan was prepared by Prof. Werner Pascha, East Asian Economic Studies/Japan and Korea at UDE, together with Prof. Patrick Köllner of the GIGA Institute of East Asian Studies in Hamburg and Prof. Aurel Croissant of the University of Heidelberg as regional coordinator.
According to the 2015 ratings, Japan´s relative position remains almost unchanged with rank 22 out of 41. Compared to its peers, a low ranking on budget policy and a decline in the quality of democracy (rank 33 of 41) are noteworthy. As a cross-national comparative survey designed to identify and foster successes in effective policymaking, the SGI explores how governments target sustainable development. This exercise is built on three pillars:Policy Performance, Democracy, and Governance.
