Abstract:
Our project studies automakers’ modular strategies, e.g. Volkswagen’s Modular Transverse Matrix (MQB), Nissan’s Common Module Family (CMF), and Mazda’s Common Architecture. We collectively call these vehicle development initiatives "Mega-platforms." In order to cope with growing diversity and complexity of vehicle designs, and increasing cost pressures, the mega-platform strategies aim at improving efficiency in vehicle development and reducing costs by (1) a long-term product planning, (2) integrated design principles and (3) commonized components, all of which cover various vehicles and market segments. We believe that these strategic initiatives will inevitably cause industry-wide changes in vehicle development, production systems, and supply chain. The purpose of our study is to clarify the changing situations in the automotive component industry and the logic behind the changes.
