Step 4 – How do I apply?

There are two ways to apply for a course offered at the University of Duisburg Essen. Depending on the degree, you will submit your online application either directly to the University or through the uni-assist portal.

Bachelor Application

Applicants who would like to apply for a German taught Bachelor course must first use the application portal of uni-assist.

Please apply regularly for admission and wait for the result.

If you fulfill all of the requirements for direct admission to the study course of your choice, you will receive the official admission letter for the first/basic semester and you can then apply for the recognition of your previous studies afterwards. Your application for the credit transfer can only be processed after you have received your admission letter.

Please only submit the German version of the application form to the Examination Office and add all required documents including your admission letter by the deadline on July, 15th for the coming winter semester and January, 15th for the coming summer semester.

The Examination office will proceed with your application for credit transfer after they have received all of the required documents in full and on time. In cooperation with the faculty, this process might take several weeks. You will be informed of the result as soon as a decision is made.

Please note that you can still enroll for the first/basic semester of the study course if you are waiting for the result. We can change and update your enrollment status to a higher semester if the recognition of your previous studies is subsequently approved.

Dates and Deadlines

Application deadlines for uni-assist applications: January 15 (for the summer semester) and July 15 (for the winter semester).

Exceptions from this rule:

  • International Studies in Engineering Programmes
  • non restricted courses
  • Applications for German language courses


The minimum language requirement for registration for the DSH Examination will be raised to C1 on the CEFR. Applications for an examination place must be accompanied by proof that level C1 has already been successfully completed. This may come in the form of a certificate or explicit confirmation from a language school that the level C1 has been successfully completed. This proof must be submitted at the time of application for the DSH Examination. Confirmations which only state the number and/or hours of German classes will no longer be accepted.
