The language of instruction is half German and half English. This means that approx. 50% of the courses are taught in German and the other 50% are taught in English. The language of the examination is the same as the language of instruction in the corresponding lecture.

Placement Tests and Language Courses in winter 2016/17
As part of your curriculum, you are required to prove the following language skills, which you may acquire parallel to your studies: German level B2 and/or English level B2.

In order to take the test, you need to have an e-mail-address from the University of Duisburg-Essen. You automatically are alloted an e-mail-address when you matricule. The results are sent to you per e-mail immediately after the test. The result notification will tell you for which English courses you may register.
Courses for ISE Students:
The IOS offers English and German language courses, at the B1 and B2 levels, in cooperation with the Support Center for International Engineering Students (SCIES) for ISE Bachelor and Master students to fulfill the prerequisites according to § 5 in the examination regulations.

Details about Course Registration
You can only register for one German course and one English course at the same time, that is two courses total.
If you have successfully completed an ISE language course and have passed the final exam, please register for the next highest course. (Example: Summer Semester 2013. German B1/1, Winter Semester 2013/14: German B1/2)
If you are a newcomer to the University Duisburg-Essen, you must take part in the placement test. Your test result will indicate your language level. Please also make sure to pay close attention to check that your courses are not held at the same time.
Please do not forget to show your language instructor your certificate for the last semester no later than the 2nd week in the semester. If you fail to do so, you will not be able to participate in the language course.
