Faculty research profiles and other Events
The research coordination organizes working meetings within the faculty research profiles as well as other events (see below) that serve the networking of the faculty of engineering.
Working meeting Tailored Materials
The meetings lead by the research coordinator focusing on the faculty research profiles Tailored Materials (TM). The goals of the meetings are to bring together the members of the profile and to exchange ideas among them about current research topics. The following potential joint research directions and collaborations emerged:
- Analysis of damage mechanisms e.g. fatigue, wear, erosion.
- Materials for Energy e.g. electrocatalysis, battery materials, hydrogen
- Merging the topics of materials and energy
The discussion focused on possibilities for cooperation within the Research Center: Future Energy Materials and Systems as well as the profile focus Materials Chain of the University Alliance Ruhr. Funded programs were also explored, such as the call for proposals on Advanced Materials within the framework of Horizon Europe (Cluster 4: Digital and Industrial Technologies) or the state cluster NMWP.NRW.
Working meeting Human-Centered Cyber-Physical Systems
The working meetings of the faculty research profiles Human-Centered Cyber-Physical Systems (HCPS) are lead by the research coordination. The goals of the meetings are to bring together the members of the HCPS profile and to exchange information among each other about current research topics. The focus is on the following topics:
- Human-Centered AI
- AI in medicine, in the field of smart living but also for the optimization of production and logistics processes
- Optimization of operational processes based on information
- Data mining and data security
In addition, through the link to the Research Center: Trustworthy Data Science and Security of the University Alliance Ruhr as well as to other ongoing projects in the field of cyber-physical systems are discussed.
Working meeting Smart Engineering
The working meetings of the faculty research profiles Smart Engineering (SE) are lead by the research coordination. The goals of the meetings are to bring together the members of the SE profile and to exchange ideas among themselves about current research topics. The following topics are discussed:
- Industry 4.0
- Digital Twin
- Augmented reality
- Life Cycle Management
- Prognosis of components and systems
In the discussion, the competence center Virtual Machining of the University Alliance Ruhr, the funding calls on the topic of circular economy (Horizon Europe) and BMBF-programs in the field of digitization and industry are discussed.
Working meeting Energy and Resource Engineering
The working meetings of the Energy and Resource Engineering (ERE) faculty research profiles are to create a starting point in the research coordination. The goals of the meetings are to bring together the members of the ERE profile and to exchange ideas among themselves about current research topics. The following proposals of the professors for joint research are discussed:
- Reliability in the future system of (electric) power supply.
- Integrated energy conversion and supply of quarters (e.g. by energy management)
- New energy carriers (H₂, NH3, metals)
- Toxins in the environment and production
Several current programs are discussed. Among them the 7th BMBF energy research program with the real laboratories of the energy turnaround, the NRW state programs progres.nrw and REVIER.GESTALTEN as well as the expansion of transdisciplinary energy research within the competence field "Energy - System - Transformation" of the University Alliance Ruhr on the agenda.
With the Science Talks, we want to initiate thematic impulses, create space for a stronger, interdisciplinary exchange and, in particular, enable closer networking between the professors of the Faculty of Engineering.
The Science Talks take place once a quarter and combine scientific lectures with exciting locations or activities that offer the opportunity to exchange ideas both professionally and informally, e.g. in the form of a guided tour, visit or networking event, and thus to find potential starting points for joint research and to talk to colleagues.
Next Science Talk - June 21, 2022 - Zeche Zollverein, Essen
Our next Science Talk will take place on Tuesday, June 21, 2022 at 3:30 p.m. at the Zeche Zollverein (Essen).
We will travel together by bus to the Zeche Zollverein, where Prof. Dr. André Niemann will give an exciting talk on the topic "Sustainable follow-up use of mining infrastructure - About underground pumped storage, the implementation of perpetual dewatering and a never-ending heat flow".
Following the discussion session, you will have the opportunity to ask more questions or connect with other faculty researchers during a casual get-together, snacks and drinks.
Afterwards, we will receive a guided tour of the colliery at 6PM and then the bus will take us back to the university at 7:30PM.
To participate in the event, registration is required by 07/06/2022 (registration link). We are looking forward to an exciting exchange!
Past Science Talks
Duisburg-Neuenkamp construction site
Our first Science Talk took us to the Duisburg-Neuenkamp construction site, where work on the new Rhine bridge is in full swing! Equipped with construction helmets and safety vests, we were not only allowed to enter the construction site, but also received a guided tour from the site manager, Mr. Ewald. After the subsequent discussion round, the participants had the opportunity to ask further questions or get in touch with other researchers of the faculty during a casual get-together.
Next Science Talk dates
- Thursday, 20/10/2022
- Wednesday, 19/12/2022
Hydrogen is one of the central topics of the future - research is also being conducted on it at the UDE. After the successful information event on the topic of "Hydrogen & Co." in January, the joint work was deepened on 20.06.2022 in presence (NETZ building) - organised by the network around the Technology and Innovation Centre Hydrogen Technologies (TIW), the faculty focus Energy and Resource Engineering, the Center for Nanointegration Duisburg-Essen (CENIDE), the research coordination of the Faculty of Engineering and other UDE institutions. The aim of this event was for researchers and/or interested parties from the entire UDE to get to know each other better in the field of hydrogen and to network interdisciplinarily in order to discuss promising topics and joint cooperation approaches. In addition to the storage and transport of hydrogen, the topics of the workshop included automation, safety, AI use, mobility and the energy industry.
If you have any questions about this event, please contact Dr Lisa Ollesch (email@example.com).
In cooperation with GUIDE, the Center for Start-ups and Innopreneurship of the UDE, the Research Coordination invited to the information event on "Research Transfer in Engineering Sciences"!
The event provided an overview of knowledge transfer as a societal mission, Intellectual Property Rights, and mentoring and event offerings from GUIDE. The overview was followed by an open discussion in which all participants were invited to contribute their expertise, ideas, and questions.
Past EventOnline information and discussion event on the Hydrogen Technology and Innovation Center
The world is changing. The energy transition poses major challenges for all areas of society. Universities play an important role here in driving forward future-oriented developments and training experts of the new generation. The buzzword "hydrogen" is often used synonymously for this change. Due to the tradition of the Ruhr area in the fields of "materials" and "energy", the UDE - together with a widespread network of partners and especially the affiliated institute ZBT - can make significant contributions. Anchoring the UDE in this thematic field offers a great opportunity.
The aim of this event was to bring together researchers from the UDE to publicize existing and just starting initiatives in the context of "hydrogen" and to promote new collaborations
