Beginning of Program

winter semester

The Metallurgy and Metal Forming B.Sc. provides a general engineering qualification in the area of metallurgy and metal forming technology for the manufacture and processing of metallic materials. Interdisciplinary, multi-system lectures are designed to teach students system skills and the ability to solve engineering problems. The course’s international focus means that students are prepared for working in a global market, and at the same time makes studying easier for international students.

This in-depth, professionally oriented course focuses on two key areas. The first is the technologies and procedures required for the production of metals for industrial use. These include steel production and processing technologies as well as the technologies for non-ferrous metals such as aluminium, copper, magnesium, nickel and titanium. With the demand for new materials coming from all areas of the technology sector, these base metals and their alloys are at the forefront of industry developments.

The second focus is the metal forming manufacturing processes for primary and secondary formation, with the focus on the process technologies that determine their properties. This encompasses hot-forming and cold-forming procedures in the iron and steel industries as well as for non-ferrous metals. It also includes forming procedures in manufacturing technology for sheet manufacture and cold forging. The course is therefore both materials-focused and manufacturing oriented.

Graduates will:

  • Master basic engineering and scientific principles and methods and the thinking behind them;
  • Master basic specialist principles in manufacturing technology;
  • Master basic specialist principles in thermodynamics;
  • Master basic specialist principles in materials technology;
  • Master basic specialist principles in metallurgy;
  • Be able to pursue their preference for a commercial or academic career via their choice of electives;
  • Have an enhanced general education with advanced language skills in German or English as well as increased employability from learning teamwork, presentation and communication skills;
  • Gain experience of their chosen profession and will be in a position of critically assess technical information and professional practice and their interdependencies;
  • Gain experience of applying scientific methods to deal independently with problems of materials technology within a specific timeframe, and be able to present the issue clearly.

Schedule of the actual semester

Campus Duisburg

The academic year is divided into semesters.

  • winter semester: from October to March
  • summer semester: from April to September

Lecture Period

In winter term the lectures usually start in mid-October and end in mid-February. The summer term lectures start usually in mid-April and finish in July. During the winter semester will be a break of two weeks for Christmas and New Year’s holidays.

Examination Period

The examination period always starts 1 week after the lecture period and lasts for approx. 5 weeks.

Social Contribution

All students are required to pay a social contribution of about 300 Euro per semester. The social contribution includes a semester ticket covering public transport in North-Rhine-Westphalia, subsidized meals in the canteen of the university and other services.

Costs of Living

We recommend budgeting around 800 to 1000 Euro per month for personal expenses.

Accommodation is available through the Student Services Office or on the private market. Rent for a single room in a student residence is approx. 300 Euro.
