Curriculum Vitae

Prof. Thomas Heberer studied political science, sinology and ethnology in Frankfurt on the Main, Göttingen and Heidelberg (Germany). After the conferral of his doctorate in 1977, he started working as an interpreter and translator in China. Later in 1989, he habilitated in Bremen (Germany). In 1998 he has taken over the position as chair of political science with emphasis on East Asia studies at the University of Duisburg-Essen.

Since 2009 he is one of the co-directors at the Confucius Institute of Metropolis Ruhr in Duisburg (Germany). In the context of this position, he is responsible for the program segement of China's politics and society. His research interests are mainly processes, patterns and protagonists of the political and social development in China. By numerous research projects in China and over 35 years of research work, he is one of the leading experts in the field of East Asia in Germany.
