On March 21st 2017 we lost our dear friend, teacher, and colleague Prof. Dr. Karl-Josef Witsch,
who past away after serious illness at the age of 69.
Charlie possessed the rare combination of an extraordinary mathematical talent
and an extremely kind and modest personality.
His mathematical research and achievements include fundamental results in radiation and scattering theory, low frequency asymptotics, boundary value problems in exterior domains, to mention just a few, particularly in the mathematical theory of Maxwell’s equations, elasticity and geophysics. The elegance and creativity of his work and his enthusiasm for mathematics in general, especially for the analysis of partial differential equations, were clearly reflected in his lectures.
Due to his various international contacts, especially his love for Finland, our group was able to establish a close and fruitful relation to the University of Jyväskylä, from which almost all our subsequent national and international collaborations emerged.
Charlie was infamous for his “rheinischen Humor”, his disorderly office, and his fearless dives into Finnish lakes in between sauna-boat rounds.
Your brilliant mind and infinite kindness will stay forever in our hearts.
Charlie, we will miss you!
