Prof. Fiona Jenkins, PhD | Equality and Excellence. A Happy Marriage of Terms?
How do discourses on gender equality sit within ‘excellence’ discourse? In this seminar. Prof. Fiona Jenkins, PhD, Australian National University, Canberra, will  be considering the effort to demonstrate that improving gender equality serves excellence. Taking the Stanford ‘Gendered Innovations’ project as her example, she examines the terms on which diverse teams are taken to improve knowledge, application and thereby excellence in Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths disciplines. She then considers how well the paradigm of knowledge implied by such arguments sits with research in the Humanities and Social Science disciplines, and more specifically with feminist work in these disciplines. Do alternatives exist for integrating gender equality and excellence discourses in post-positivist feminist projects? What does gender equality mean – and how is perhaps it reduced as a political goal - when it is described in terms of positivist science-enriching ‘diversity’? ...
