In order to reduce the human carbon footprint, the current energy system needs to be changed. The use of hydrogen as an energy carrier, which can potentially be (re)generated from renewable energy, is a promising approach to this problem. The Ruhr Area presents itself as a leading model region for a hydrogen-based economy. Looking at the region in detail, it becomes apparent that different cities use different narratives about hydrogen to promote associated technologies and policies.
