Theorizing Violence and Gender

The lecture builds on Walby’s earlier analysis of gen-
der relations as constituted in a few major varieties of
gender regimes and analyses the current authoritar-
ian turn. Authoritarianism is distinguished from the
neoliberal gender regime from which it is emerging.
Violence is not treated as an individual behaviour but
as a social institution, equivalent to the institutional
domains of economy, polity, and civil society. This
offers a new context in which to think about whether
the use of the criminal justice system to reduce and
end violence against women is carceral or the com-
pletion of the project of modernity for women. The
form of the gender regime shapes the implications of
these feminist projects to prevent violence in inter-
sectional contexts.
