Photocuring Graphene Oxide Liquid Crystals for High-Strength Structural Materials
Speaker: Dr. Keroles Riad is the CEO of O Nanotech & Enuf and a Banting Postdoctoral Fellow at Carleton University.

Abstract:
Graphene is renowned as the strongest known material, but the challenge remains in scaling this strength from the microscale to the macroscale. Solid structures derived from self-assembled graphene oxide liquid crystals, such as paper and fibers, have demonstrated excellent mechanical properties. Traditional methods like vacuum filtration, wet spinning, and freeze-drying have been employed to produce such structures. In this work, we introduce photocuring as a novel technique for solidifying self-assembled graphene oxide liquid crystals, enabling the creation of thicker samples and diverse shapes. The resulting photocured graphene oxide paper exhibits mechanical properties comparable to those of benchmark samples prepared using vacuum filtration.
