"Balancing Justice, Workload, and Well-Being: A Qualitative Study of Teacher Educators' Post-pandemic Realities"
Prof. Dr. Beth Wassel, Rowan University, NJ, USA
This lecture will describe a set of qualitative studies examining how teacher educators perceive, navigate, and respond to their work in the current era. Drawing on data from teacher educators in the US and Spain who engage in inclusive and critical pedagogies, the analyses identified several key forces shaping participants’ work experiences. These include (1) challenges arising from their institutions, curricula, and programs; (2) the complexities of teaching for justice and equity in the current sociopolitical climate; and (3) the range of emotions they experience in response to emerging issues, such as students’ mental health and expanding work responsibilities. While participants shared examples of resilience and joy, increasing work expectations and institutional challenges posed threats to their collective agency. The discussion proposes a model for teacher educators' work that accounts for the new realities of students, schools, and societies.
