Postponement of courses and start of lectures
Due to the progressive spread of the novel corona virus, we are suspending our courses and examinations until 19.04.2020.
Lectures and courses of the summer semester 2020
In agreement with the Ministry of Culture and Science NRW (MKW NRW), the Rectorate has decided to postpone the start of the semester to 20 April 2020. This means that teaching in classroom form will be completely discontinued by then. This applies to courses, exercises, tutorials, seminars, laboratory practicals and, if applicable, other forms of events.
Examinations
All planned examinations, including e-examinations, from Monday, 16 March 2020 onwards are initially cancelled. We will make every effort to create secure conditions for the exams so that they can be made up for by 20 April 2020.

We hope that these measures will ensure the best possible protection for all members of the UDE and slow down the spread of the virus. At the same time, we would like to point out once again that each and every individual can make a significant contribution to their own protection and that of others by observing hygiene measures and reducing social contacts.

Chair receives DAAD funding for project with University of Wollongong in Australia
The chair of Prof. Dr. Stieglitz has been granted project funding within the framework of the German Academic Exchange Services (DAAD) program of project-related person exchange (PPP). The provided funds enable young researchers of the chair to visit the University of Wollongong in New South Wales, south of Sydney. The project is carried out in cooperation with Prof. Rodney Clarke and investigates social media discussions that occur during enterprise crises. The aim is to better analyse and understand these discussions by gaining new insights about the users involved. The project runs over 2 years until the end of 2021.

Chair publishes report on Twitter Communication and the 2019 European Parliament Election
Over a period of one and a half months, the Chair collected and evaluated 643,182 tweets from 168,948 authors related to the EU election. All tweets in English and German written between April 1, 2019 and May 17, 2019 and containing one of the following hashtags were tracked: #EUElections2019, #EP2019, #Europawahl2019, #EUElections, #EUElection, #Europawahl, #EUWahl, #EUW19, #EP2019, #EE2019.
The data was evaluated against various criteria such as account visibility and activity as well as tweet visibility. In addition, relationships between different accounts were visualized using social network analyses.

Prof. Stieglitz Editor in new department in BISE Journal
Prof. Stefan Stieglitz is now one of the editors in the Department "Human Computer Interaction and Social Computing" of the Business & Information Systems Engineering (BISE) Journal. Together with Prof. Shirley Gregor and Prof. Alexander Mädche, he will supervise papers on topics such as usability engineering, user experience design or novel interaction techniques and devices editorially. Interested authors are cordially invited to submit relevant articles.

PROCO Chair publishes EJIS article on the influence of social bots on opinion perception in social media
In a forthcoming issue of the European Journal of Information Systems (EJIS), Prof. Stieglitz's chair has publishes an article examining how social bots can influence public opinion. The underlying assumption is that they influence users' tendency to express their own opinions by encouraging a spiral of silence.
Social bots, automated accounts in social media, are said to influence the opinion-forming process of social media users. For this reason, they recently received increased attention from both the media and research. However, such an influence on opinion formation has not yet been specifically observed, partly due to methodological difficulties.
The paper, titled „Are social bots a real threat? An agent-based model of the spiral of silence to analyse the impact of manipulative actors in social networks” therefore uses a methodologically innovative approach - with the help of a simulation (using agent-based models) the team investigates the potential of social bots to trigger a spiral of silence. The results show that under certain conditions even a small number of 4% bots in a network can change the climate of opinion in their favour.
The article is the result of a collaboration between participants of the Research Training Group "User-Centred Social Media" at the University of Duisburg-Essen, in which Prof. Stieglitz is Principal Investigator.

EU funds international research project "RISE_SMA”
Coordinated by the PROCO Chair at the University of Duisburg-Essen, the new research project "RISE_SMA - Social Media Analytics for Society and Crises" deals with opportunities and risks of social media. RISE_SMA aims to improve data analysis methods in order to filter relevant information from social media and process it in a meaningful way. To achieve these goals, nine partner institutions in Europe, Australia, Latin America and Southeast Asia are working together within the project.
The interdisciplinary network is funded by the EU with approx.1.2 million euros until 2022. It consists of selected top researchers, technology companies and political actors and includes the universities of Leiden (Netherlands), Agder (Norway), Sydney and Queensland (TU/Australia), UNISINOS (Brazil) and Padjadjaran (Indonesia) as well as the software developer Virtimo in Berlin and the municipality of Kristiansand (Norway).
RISE_SMA aims to take into account the increased social importance of various social media channels. In addition to the role and extent to which these are used by private, political, economic and scientific actors to disseminate information and messages, the role as an information medium, e.g. in natural disasters or attempts to find missing people, is also being investigated.
Prof. Stieglitz comments: “Apart from the technical requirements, it is of primary importance from an ethical and data-protection perspective that this data is handled responsibly.” This means that individuals, relief organizations and political stakeholders should benefit from a higher transparency enabling them to make better decisions – for example, in connection with elections or rescue missions.

ProCo chair is part of Erasmus+ project on VR
The PROCO chair of Prof. Stieglitz participates in a research project on VR within the Erasmus+ programme of the EU. The goal of the project is the research and evaluation of VR scenarios for teaching. The aim is to clarify how VR technologies can be used to improve the quality of teaching. Possible scenarios are, for example, the use in scientific exercises with hazardous material, which can be carried out without risk, or transnational courses in which students from several countries participate. The project runs over 2 years with a volume of 220,000 Euro. In addition to the University of Duisburg-Essen, the University of Liechtenstein (as coordinator) and the University of Agder from Norway are also involved in the project. Associated partners are the European Research Center for Information Systems (ERCIS) and the University of Nebraska Omaha (USA).

DFG is funding a project on research data management at the University of Duisburg-Essen
Together with the WWU Münster, Prof. Dr. Stefan Stieglitz receives funding from the German Research Foundation (DFG) for the implementation of the project "sciebo Research Data Services - Research Data Management Services and Tools for Scientists". The aim is to implement particularly low-threshold services for the management of research data. Ideally, this scientific research data should be stored in a sustainable and transparent way. In order to make this additional work easier for researchers, services and tools will be developed over a period of three years. These tolls will support research data management from project development and operational work with the data in the research project through to the publication and archiving of research data. These services and tools will be technically embedded in the collaboration and storage service "sciebo", which now has approximately 115,000 users. The project is conducted in cooperation with Dr. Beate Tröger from the University and State Library (ULB) Münster and Dr. Raimund Vogl from the Centre for Information Processing (ZIV) of the WWU Münster.

First Virtual Symposium on Social Media Analytics in Crisis Communication and Society
Social media form an essential part of the public online communication. They are used to gather news, maintain relationships and spread user-generated content. During extreme events, ranging from man-made crisis like terror attacks to natural disasters like floods or bushfires, social media are an important source for real-time news, both for the people on side and the emergency agencies. Due to its great importance for crisis communication and society the chair Professional Communication in electronic media / Social Media decide to organize a Virtual Symposium about the Analysis of Social Media Data in the two fields. In cooperation with international partners from Norway, the Netherlands, Indonesia, Australia and Brazil three innovative research projects will be discussed on the 6.03.2018. The interdisciplinary team of researchers and partners from industry and civil society’s formed an expert network, which has the aim to jointly take the research on Social Media Analytics to the next level.
The University of Agder (Norway) will be represented by Nadia Saad Nori. She will be talking about humanitarian crisis response in dangerous places, elaborating how social media analytics can support safer passage for aid workers. Budi Nurani Ruchjana, of the University Padjadjaran (Indonesien), will talk about Clustering Ethno-Informatics of Naming Villages on Java Island using Data Mining to support tourism in Indonesia. The University of Duisburg. Essen, will be represented by Björn Ross, he will give insides into the greatest challenges if social media analytics. Chair receives best paper award at HICSS 2018
The paper "The Diffusion of Crisis-Related Communication on Social Media: An Empirical Analysis of Facebook Reactions" received the best paper award at the 51st Hawaii International Conference on Systemic Sciences (HICSS). It was written by Björn Ross, Tobias Potthoff and Prof. Stefan Stieglitz at the PROCO Chair and emerged from a cooperation in course of a DAAD project with the University of Agder in Norway.
In the context of crisis communication, the article examines the relationship of various parameters of Facebook posts (such as text length or use of images) with the response to these posts (e.g., the frequency of sharing or expressing emotional responses). The authors show that pictures and videos in articles have a positive influence on the number of reactions to the post, while text length has a negative influence on the frequency with which a post is shared.

Social Media Chair launches website on the Twitter communication surrounding the 2017 Bundestag election.
The department "Professional Communication in Electronic Media / Social Media" (PROCO) has launched a website on which public Twitter communication in the run-up to the federal election in 2017 is presented.
Based on various hashtags (e. g. #btw2017 or #bundestagswahl [German for Bundestags election]) and accounts (@MartinSchulz or @CDU) tweets have been collected since July 11,2017 and prepared in several graphics on the website. As the increasing use of social media for political communication also increases the amount of data produced as well as its significance, the website is intended to show how often the Bundestag elections, parties and politicians are discussed on Twitter in the Bundestags election campaign of 2017.
With the help of the graphics, parameters such as the visibility of the parties or the number of tweets for the Bundestag election can be fast assessed visually. In addition, individual aspects are addressed and analysed in more detail. The analyses are part of the DFG project "Topic careers in internet publicity", which is carried out jointly between the University of Duisburg-Essen (Prof. Dr. Stefan Stieglitz) and the LMU Munich (Prof. Dr. Christoph Neuberger).

Prof. Stieglitz to co-chair Tracks on ECIS and MKWI in 2018
As in 2017 Prof. Stieglitz will co-Host the Track on Use of ICT in crisis communications at 2018s European Conference on Information Systems (ECIS) and will furthermore organize the Social Media Analytics Track at 2018s Multikonferenz Wirtschaftsinformatik (MKWI).
The ECIS Track will again be co-chaired with Prof. Deborah Bunker and Adjunct Associate Professor Tony Sleigh both from the University of Sydney Business School. Papers in the track will deal with the use of communication technologies like Social Media in crisis situations. The ECIS 2018 will take place in Portsmouth, UK from June 23rd to June 28th 2018.
A new track at the MKWI in 2018, the track on Social Media Analytics will be co-chaired with Prof. Jan Fabian Ehmke from the European University Viadrina. As Social Media have spread they have become an important data source for businesses and researchers alike. The requirements, implications and limits for a proper analysis of such data are the subject of papers within the track. The conference will take place in Lüneburg from March 6th to March 9th 2018.
Papers for the ECIS can be submitted until November 16th 2017, for the MKWI the deadline is September 30th 2017.

BMBF funds project on research data management
Together with RWTH Aachen University and the University Library Duisburg-Essen, Prof. Stieglitz will be working on the topic of research data management in the next two years. The project is funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research. The objective of the collaborative project titled UNEKE is the development of criteria for the establishment of research data infrastructures at universities. Research Data Management (RDM) focuses on the way in which researchers store their collected data and archive them in the long term amongst others to enable later reproducibility.

The chair of Prof. Dr. Stieglitz received three project grants in the course of the German Academic Exchange Services (DAAD) program of project-related person exchange (PPP). Prof. Stieglitz und Dr. Meske honoured with AIS Best Information Systems Publications Award
Together with Prof. Kai Riemer from the University of Sydney Business School, the two researchers receive the award for the paper "From Top to Bottom: Investigating the Changing Role of Hierarchy in Enterprise Social Networks", which was published in the Business & Information Systems Engineering (BISE)-Journal. The distinction is awarded to a maximum of 5 selected articles each year. The aim of the selection is „to bring outstanding papers across a range of journals to the attention of the IS community“. The award was presented at this year's International Conference on Information Systems (ICIS) in Dublin.

Prof. Stieglitz acts as consultants for founders
In the context of an EXIST Business start-up Grant Prof. Stieglitz acts as a mentor for the Start-Up Kaufsafari. Kaufsafari aims at B2B-customers and acts as an agent that mediates between other Start-Ups and the retail. The aim on the one hand is to help start-ups placing their products in retail stores, on the other hand to give retail stores the opportunity to offer innovative products. In the course of the grant Prof. Stieglitz acts as contact for the funders of Kaufsafari and supports them as consultant with expertise in the realm of Information Systems as well as with general advice. The sponsorship runs for a year since October 2016.

Prof. Stieglitz official member of the ERCIS-Network
The European Research Center for Information Systems (ERCIS) functions as a network of persons and institutions which work and research in the realm of Information Systems. During his time as assistant professor in Münster Prof. Stiglitz was already a member of the network. After his transition to the University of Duisburg-Essen he is now reinstated as an official member.

Prof. Stieglitz to co-host track on ECIS conference in 2017
Along with Prof. Deborah Bunker and associate professor Tony Sleigh (both of the University of Sydney Business School) Prof. Stieglitz will host a track with the title ‚Use of ICT in Crisis Communications‘ at the European Conference on Information Systems (ECIS) 2017. The submissions on that track deal with the question how communication can be used before, during and after crisis situations to intercept and absorb possible negative consequences. It focuses specifically on the use of information- and collaboration systems.
The conference will take place in Guimarães, Portugal from June 5 through June 10 of 2017 for the 25th time.
